The Shorter Facebook Catechism

Brother Hank Balch, fellow Southern seminarian, has posted an amazing blog post about using Facebook as the Christian “Courtbook for Guys“! Here’s an excerpt:

Q 1: What is the chief end of Facebook?
A 1: The chief end of facebook is to find thee a wife.

Q 2: How art thee to go about finding thyself a wife?
A 2: Thou shalt search thine own network, and that of thine friend’s, to findest a godly girl who is listed as “single”, or hast no relationship listing at all.

Q 3: What shalt thee do once such a girl hast been found?
A 3: Thou, after deciding such a girl is godly, shalt commenceth to poke her.

The Voice of the LORD

A prayer and reflection on Psalm 29

Father in Heaven,
I bring praise and glory to your name, for you have spoken over the waters and the seas, the glory from your voice — full of majesty — shakes the earth! My heart rejoices because though you speak, I am alive to hear your voice! I am unworthy to hear you speak, undeserving of your self-revelation.

For I am a sinner, a son who has sinned against his Father — even though I have been commanded innumerable times to be obedient. So thank you Lord for your mercy. While flames of fire come forth from your mouth and makes the ground tremble, I do not fear, for the fire of your Spirit gives me life. Through your Son’s atoning sacrifice I am made righteous before you. Now a sinner called a saint, you remember not my inequities.

Unlike Riding a Bike

GT bikePeople say that most things in life that is like riding a bike. You may not have done it in a long, long time, but despite the hiatus from that activity, you would still remember how to do it–how to balance and pedal once you get back on that bike for a ride.

Is it really true for all things in life? That because you have done it in the past, you will definitely remember how to do it today?… And you can just resume that activity, as if you never forgot how to, like you never even had that long hiatus?

I am a personal testimony to the fact that it is not always possible to just get back on the bike and start riding. After two years, (hypothetically speaking) I still have trouble getting back on the bicycle. It’s been so long of not cycling that I have a tremendous fear of falling, of slipping and sliding, of crashing and burning.

Search me, Know me

A prayer and reflection on Psalm 139

Father Almighty,
You have searched me, and you know me. You know everything about me. Everything that I think about: all my dreams, hopes, and ambitions; all of my sins, failures and weaknesses. You know it all. And in all this, you know even my hidden intentions, including the worthless affections and vain desires that I hold in secret. Wherever I go, whatever I do, you know my heart—you know every reason, motive, and purpose behind it. Even before I think it, want it, feel it or do it, you knew every detail about it. Before I even confess anything to you, before I open my mouth—my words are intimately known by you.

For you are God. I cannot lie to you. Even if I speak untruths, you know already what is truly on my mind.

I could run, I could hide, but I can never escape your presence. You are here, there, you are everywhere. I dare not even try to flee from you, for such would be a waste of my energy—you would be there before I move one step. Therefore, I come to you; I run to you and hide myself in you and in your Son, Jesus the Christ. For from you, in you, and through you alone I live, move, and breathe.

Tabula Rasa

There was a time not long ago that I subconsciously thought that coming to Southern Seminary and moving to Louisville would be the answer to all my problems. Not that I have any significant problems in my life or traumatizing issues to deal with, but I am sure there was a part of me that hoped to run away from those unresolved concerns that plague my sinful heart. Those who truly know me know that I am mature enough not to start seminary with such a mentality, and that is why in the months leading up to my start at Southern I had actively sought to die to such sinful, unhelpful, futile thoughts.
