Usually life’s greatest gifts come wrapped in adversity

The Search for an Enduring Laptop

My 15.4″ 2ghz Centrino/1gb/100gb Acer is too heavy to be portable and getting quite loud! Thus, I’m looking into lightweight laptops (under 6lbs) that are more mobile, and something that must last me 3 years. However, this generally means something smaller than 15.4 inches. (With a new lappy, that’ll mean my sister will reap the benefits of my old 2ghz Centrino)

Here are my options so far:

Any other good, viable options?

(As you can see, I don’t know how much I should spend yet–I should be wallet-conscious and get something with the most bang for the bucuk though. But if ever I do spend more, the MacBook Pro would be my choice!)

The only reason I’d take the Macbook Pro over the Macbook is the video card. That aside, the rest of the upgrades are more preferential. But, I am for a Mac, I’m really happy that I took a chance on Apple, considering I’d never even touched one before I decided to buy one.

I have been on the same quest and without a doubt I would go with a MacBook. Unless you’re doing a lot of music of video editing, the pro probably is more than you need. Most of the applications are still only using 32 bit video card, so that’s not a real issue right now (maybe a couple years down line.) I would suggest upgrading to the faster hard drive. And don’t forget that if you buy before Sept. 15 you get a $200 rebate towards an iPod. (that’s my $.02)

Yeh… I know about the free iPod after rebate deal. My sister would keep the iPod, if I get a MacBook, since I already have a nano.

Indeed, the MacBook is on the top of my list ;-) Unfortunately, word is that it’s up for a makeover and revamp very soon (for the Christmas shopping season?).

It’s always like that. The computer + iPod deal is to get rid of all the old computers and iPods to make way for the newer ones.

Everything is speculation, since Apple does not release information about product updates. Remember, the MacBooks just had a recent upgrade about a month and a half ago with the Santa Rosa. The question is: will the next upgrade be that major and do you mind waiting? As you know, there will always be something bigger and better down the line. I have a friend who works for Apple and he seems to think that they will be releasing Leopard sometime in the fall. But, you can always pick the software up for a $150 once it’s released. Also, you don’t have to get a Nano…you might want to upgrade to a video iPod for $50.

Thanks for the prodding, guys! You’ve been much help… I’m sold:)

The iPod will be for my sister, and she’ll likely stay with a nano for use when excercising.

Anybody running Windows (XP/Vista) through Parallels or BootCamp? I’m hoping to get my hands on Parallels, so that I can run Vista also. Most Bible/study applications are not yet available for Mac.

You’re in a tight spot. IIRC there isnt support for vista in bootcamp until Leopard, which isn’t until..October/November (spec).

I would actually get the macbook pro at the point. They have the LED displays happening, which Im sure you will enjoy while outside on that awsome-ness campus of yours =)
